Anatahan Size: 32 square kilometers (12.5 square miles) Population:Uninhabited Highest Point: 788 meters (2,585 feet) Fast facts: Located 121 kilometers (75 miles) north of Saipan, Anatahan is a volcanic cone
made of overlapping calderas. The volcano
erupted on May 10, 2003 for the first time in recorded history. Prior to that the only recent seismic
activity there includes a period of felt earthquakes that began on March 30, 1990. Earthquakes continued
for two more days. The volcanic unrest caused the evacuation of the island's 23 residents. The island was
declared off-limits after a swarm of earthquakes took place from late May to early June of 1993. Habitation
by Japanese colonists and World War II military activities have left their mark on the island.
The island is home to some rare animal species.
