Who is Robert Paine Scripps?

The son of Scripps Oceanography founder E.W. Scripps and nephew of patroness Ellen Browning Scripps, Robert Paine Scripps (1895-1938) was born and spent his life in the San Diego area. As a youth, he frequently visited the Scripps campus and sailed on its research vessels. Scripps Oceanography survived the depression thanks to Robert Paine Scripps. Not only did he more than double his family's support during this period, but Robert Paine Scripps also made these gifts strategically, arranging for the state of California to match the family's contributions.
