The teaching collection, managed by Dr. Jeffrey Gee, holds about 10,000 samples of rocks, fossils and minerals, with associated data sets. This collection houses a wide variety of samples including deep-sea rocks and minerals, terrestrial rocks and minerals, marine microfossils, macrofossils, thin sections, and microscope slides. These samples are being carefully curated by Jeff Gee and assistant, Carla Eichler. This collection is ideal for use in classes and labs taught by not only SIO professors, but also professors from local colleges and teachers from local high schools.
Samples in the teaching collection are used in many different SIO classes, some examples are as follows: Paleobiology & History of Life (Norris), Evolution of Earth's Biosphere (Norris), Natural Hist/Coastal Habitats (Norris), Intro/Earth&Environmental Sci (Norris and Gee), Geology of the National Parks (Gee and Cook), Petrology & Geochem/Earth (Hilton) and more.
The teaching collection is also a great place to take tour groups, inspiring knowledge and support of the geological collections. Here we can show some of our most visually stimulating samples, and then teach visitors about the sample itself, like how it formed, how it got to where it was collected, what research has come to tell us about the sample, and more.
The priceless material and knowledge held in this collection will teach students and visitors, young and old, for generations to come about geology and geological processes and hopefully inspire many new scientists along the way.
