Doctoral Time Limits

All graduate students are subject to University policy on time limits to the Ph.D. The Graduate Division has three time limits pertaining to students' academic progress toward the Ph.D. degree:

  • Pre Candidacy Time Limit (PCTL): Maximum registered time in which a student must advance to doctoral candidacy may not exceed four years.
  • Total Support Limit (SUTL): Maximum time during which a doctoral student is eligible for support may not exceed seven years (refer to Student Support).
  • Total Registered Time Limit (TRTL): Maximum registered time in which a student must complete all doctoral requirements may not exceed eight years.
