Title: The History and Future of the Hydrographic Doppler Sonar System on the R.V. Roger Revelle

Shortly after the launching of the RV Revelle a SIO-built dual frequency Doppler sonar system was installed. The goal was to routinely map ocean currents and biological scattering fields, globally. The sonars featured higher resolution (140 kHz) and longer ranges (50 kHz) than commercially available alternatives. Collectively termed the Hydrographic Doppler Sonar System, the system has been operated for the past 18 years through a cooperative effort of SIO Shipboard Technical Services and the MPL MOD (Ocean Physics) Group. Data are currently archived my the MOD Group and are publicly available. The Revelle will be undergoing a mid-life refit in 2019-20 and it is planned to significantly improve the performance of the HDSS at this time. Examples of the data and potential improvements will be discussed.
