Title: Global modeling of internal tides and the internal gravity wave continuum
We present results from our ongoing, ~15+ year effort to model internal tides in global ocean models. We focus on simulations of HYCOM, the Navy global operational model, and to a lesser extent on simulations of the MITgcm performed on NASA computers. Both sets of simulations were forced concurrently by tidal and atmospheric fields, and both sets carry a partial internal gravity wave continuum spectrum. We summarize our model comparisons to both in-situ and remotely sensed data, and the relevance of global internal tide models to operational oceanography and altimetry, including the upcoming SWOT (Surface Water Ocean Topography) mission. We also present some preliminary results of the internal gravity wave spectra in regional model forced at its boundaries by the global MITgcm, and run at much higher vertical resolutions than are possible in global models.
