TITLE:          The Sensory Biology of Electroreception

ABSTRACT:

Diverse aquatic vertebrates have adaptations to facilitate the detection of microvolt scale biogenic electric fields yet identification of the transduction mechanisms for these specialized receptors has remained elusive.  In a discussion ranging from molecular profiling to organismal physiology, I describe electroreception and sensory-guided behaviors with a particular focus on the cartilaginous fishes.
