"Using Movement Patterns to Reduce Bycatch, Assess Population Dynamics, and Develop West Coast Fisheries for Swordfish"

Abstract: This seminar will focus on recent research on highly migratory species performed at the Pfleger Institute of Environmental Research.  The talk will highlight data collection, collaboration with cooperative fishers and how these efforts have and continue to be used in the management of the West Coast swordfish resource.  The seminar will highlight the development of California deep-set fishing techniques and how they have led to the authorization of a new west coast fishery.  Discussion will also highlight several NOAA-funded projects that have collectively contributed to these recent developments.
