TITLE:  Chemical Biology of Natural Products from Marine Animals and Their Symbiotic Bacteria

ABSTRACT:

The biodiversity of the marine realm is reflected in an enormous variety of metabolic pathways and bioactive small molecules. Animal biochemistry is often considered to be of limited scope in comparison to microbes. For this reason, symbiotic bacteria greatly enrich the marine animal metabolome by contributing many elaborate natural products, some of which have advanced to clinical use. It is increasingly apparent that the animals themselves also have a previously hidden diversity of metabolic pathways. Our approaches to discover and express these pathways, and to apply them to drug discovery and biotechnology, will be described.
