AOS Seminar: Speaker Kevin Hardy

02/11/2016 - 4:00pm

Please join us for the following AOS Seminar for Thursday, February 11 at 4:00 PM in Spiess Hall Room 330.

Speaker: Kevin Hardy, Scripps Institute of Oceanography

Title: "Open Source Landers"

Kevin Hardy began his oceanography career at Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 1972 and spent most of his career working in IGPP. He retired from SIO in June 2011. In October 2011, he was personally recruited to join James Cameron's "Deep Sea Challenge" to send a manned submersible and landers to the deepest ocean depths. We welcome Kevin Hardy back to SIO to discuss his current interest, Open Source Landers.

"   Landers provide the most cost effective means to investigate the benthic environment. They can remain in situ for extended periods of time.  Ships of opportunity, such as the Sea Keeper International's Discovery Yachts, are making the cost of sea borne operations negligible. Together, these new/old techniques of access to the sea and access to the depths are providing researchers rediscovered opportunities for system development and hypothesis testing.   "
