Earthquake Safety Month
Be prepared, not scared!
The focus is on earthquakes in October, when groups throughout California raise awareness about earthquake safety. Come shake, rattle and roll with us and check out our earthquake education programs throughout the month!
Great California ShakeOut! at Birch Aquarium
Join Birch Aquarium for the largest-ever earthquake drill in California and stay for a day of activities about seismic science. Design and construct your own building and test its ability to withstand an earthquake, test your knowledge of earthquake preparedness with an interactive game, and get moving and shaking with the Quake Catcher game from Scripps scientists.
Additional Great ShakeOut! Activities
Oct. 15: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Think Tank: Earthquake Challenge
Explore the science behind earthquakes and the effects earthquakes have on man-made structures. By building your own structures on a shake table using a variety of resources and building materials, discover how structures are designed to withstand a quake.
Tilt Trivia: Earthquake Preparedness
Test your knowledge of proper earthquake safety and preparedness by playing an interactive tablet game called Tilt Trivia.
Quake Catcher: Kinect Game
Quake Catcher is an interactive Kinect game that gets your body moving and shaking! Become a seismologist in Seismic City and learn how to prepare for, detect, and respond to an earthquake. Debi Kilb, a Scripps scientist who developed the game, will be onsite to discuss her work.
