Weekly CASPO Seminar: join us on Zoom every Wednesday at 3:30 pm to hear about the latest and greatest in Climate, Atmospheric Sciences, and Physical Oceanography

Amanda Babson of the US National Park Service will give a talk titled Climate adaptation in coastal national parks: ways oceanography informs resource management

Faced with rising sea level and increasing storm impacts to coastal parks, the National Park Service is moving forward with research, vulnerability assessments, scenario planning and adaptation strategies so that, as climate change affects parks, we can continue to provide stewardship of natural and cultural resources. This seminar will provide an overview of ways coastal parks are adapting to climate change and examples of how oceanography is used to inform those strategies. To help parks prioritize climate adaptation across disparate resources, we developed a vulnerability assessment method that integrates across natural resources, cultural resources and facilities. One cultural resource example is how do we prioritize adaptation for archeological sites, from impacts such as groundwater change. Storm examples range from post-Hurricane Sandy resilience research to preparing for increased Nor’easter impacts.
