CASPO Seminar: Julia Green (Columbia University), "Large soil moisture constraint on terrestrial carbon cycle"

04/04/2018 - 3:30pm

The terrestrial biosphere is estimated to absorb 25-30% of anthropogenic CO2 emissions, yet continental uptake is the least constrained CO2 flux, leading to large uncertainties in climate projections. This presentation will show that soil moisture is a major limiting factor of land CO2 uptake in the twenty-first century, and will explain the different mechanisms behind this constraint. It will demonstrate that to provide better estimates of future climate, it is essential to represent processes related to soil moisture and vegetation water-stress with greater accuracy in models.
