Dear Scripps Community,
We would like to invite Scripps academic and administrative staff, students and friends to a symposium honoring Charlie’s 75th birthday on Thursday August 28th and Friday August 29th at the Robert Paine Scripps Forum Auditorium. This symposium is an experiment in interdisciplinary communication, in which distinguished scientists will speak to an audience of distinguished scientists form other fields about the main challenges in their discipline. They have been asked to avoid technical jargon. Vigorous audience questioning is an essential part of the plan. Thursday’s topics will be Fusion and Laboratory Plasmas, Space and Astrophysical Plasmas, Astrophysics and Cosmology, Earth Observations, and Oceans. Friday's topics will be Biology and Conservation, Climate Change, Energy and Sustainability Solutions, Future of Science and Technology, and Universitites on the Cusp of Change.
In addition to invited speakers from the Scripps and UCSD community, there will be speakers from Cambridge (UK), Carnegie Mellon University, Columbia, Harvard, MIT, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Oregon State University, Princeton, Stanford, The Salk Institute, UCLA, UCSB, The University of Maryland, and the University of Texas, as well as the California Council on Science and Technology; The Intellisis Corp, the International Council on System Engineering, The New England Aquarium, and the Qualcomm Institute. The luminaries include the former administrator of NASA, the former Director of the Soviet Space Research Institute and key advisor to Mikhail Gorbachev, and the former President of the Royal Society of London.
Lunch will be provided on both days. There will be a soft drink and hors d’oeuvres reception at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 28th and a beer, wine, and heavy hors d’oeuvres reception at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, August 29th.
About 160 people have committed to attending all or part of the symposium already, but the Forum can serve up to 300, and we would hope members of the Scripps community would take advantage of this opportunity. Attendance may be limited so we ask you to print out a ticket through eventbrite and bring it to the symposium. We will make 150 tickets available first come, first served.
