CMBC Brown Bag: Adventures in Marine Conservation on Maui

10/20/2015 - 12:30pm

Liz Foote, founder and executive director of Project S.E.A. Link will share examples of collaborative community-based coral reef conservation initiatives on Maui, focused on the impacts of both overfishing and land-based pollution. Many of the efforts to be discussed involve promoting the effectiveness of the Kahekili Herbivore Fisheries Management Area (KHFMA), an innovative Marine Managed Area established in 2009 with the purpose of protecting herbivorous species of fishes and urchins.  Liz will discuss the history of the site’s establishment and how it is faring six years later, as well as the multi-agency watershed-scale management planning and scientific efforts currently underway in the broader region of West Maui.
