CMBC Brown Bag - Sustainable Humanity, Sustainable Nature: Our Responsibility

06/03/2014 - 12:30pm

Last month the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences hosted a joint workshop at the Vatican entitled, “Sustainable Humanity, Sustainable Nature: Our Responsibility.” Workshop participants included ethicists, anthropologists, glaciologists, sociologists, economists, politicians, biologists, religious leaders, atmospheric chemists, labor organizers, and people of so many more disciplines from around the world engaging in conversation ranging from Arctic sea ice decline to human trafficking.  From SIO were Prof Veerabhadran Ramanathan (workshop co-convener), former director Charlie Kennel, and Professor Walter Munk as well as two students who participated as observers, Emily Kelly (CMBC) and Matt Siegfried (IGPP).  At this CMBC Brown Bag Emily and Matt will share the discussion that occurred amongst the 43 experts who spoke during the workshop, the major conclusions of these discussions, and what has happened since.  A highlight of the workshop was participants bringing the group’s message of sustainability, climate change, and human dignity to Pope Francis, who was recently quoted as saying, “We are custodians of Creation.”
