E.W. Scripps Associates presents
Behind-the-Scenes at Scripps:
Tour of the R/V Melville
Scripps Nimitz Marine Facility (MARFAC)
Thursday, February 6, 2014
Please join us for this unique members-only event where guests will have the opportunity to tour the Scripps' research vessel Melville, which will be docked at the Scripps Nimitz Marine Facility (MARFAC) in Point Loma. Built in 1969, the R/V Melville is 279 feet long, and can accommodate a scientific crew of 38 faculty members and students for research and exploration cruises around the world.
Professors use field trips aboard Scripps research vessels to underscore the content of their curricula, to demonstrate field methods, and to introduce students to practical aspects of the science. Shipboard experience is an important element in undergraduate and graduate classroom instruction at Scripps, and proceeds from this event will support the
UC Ship Funds Program.
While at the event, you will also have the opportunity to learn about MARFAC, the support and management center for the Scripps fleet of research vessels, as well as see R/V Robert Gordon Sproul and R/P FLIP. This facility is one of the largest operating bases at any oceanographic institution.
Event fee: $35 per person
This is a member-only event for our E.W. Scripps Associates and Friends of the Collections members. If you are not a current member, you can join or renew today!
Please RSVP by January 31st by filling out the form below, emailing email@example.com or calling (858) 534-6945.
