TITLE:          Plankton, carbon export, and the multiple pathways of the biological pump in the California Current Ecosystem

ABSTRACT:

The biological pump refers to processes that transport organic carbon fixed by phytoplankton from the surface ocean into the mesopelagic, leading to net CO2 export from the surface ocean-atmosphere system.  Most studies of these biological pump have focused on export mediated by sinking particles, however simultaneous measurements of new production and gravitational particle export suggest that other pathways must be quantitatively important for total carbon export.  In this talk, I will focus on results from the California Current Ecosystem LTER program addressing understudied mechanisms of the biological pump including diel vertical migration, export at mesoscale features, and subduction.
