Phil Bresnahan - Geosciences Research Division

Talk Title: "No, seriously—it's for science! Surfing with a Smartfin: non-profit citizen science to study and communicate coastal issues."

Description: I'm interested in the intersection between ocean health and human influence—not just investigating this confluence but also attempting to convey its importance to non-oceanographers. I'm currently leading the development of the Smartfin: a surfboard fin sensor package designed to investigate coastal dynamics and a project created to disseminate our understanding of human-caused changes to the coast through a partnership with the broader surfing community. I'll discuss the current system architecture, early results (we have 50 fins "deployed" in Southern California), and where we want to go next.

Talk Title: “Del Mar Oceanographic: commercializing the Wirewalker”

Description: The Wirewalker vertical profiler was developed to enable FLIP-like intensive vertical profiling at remote sites worldwide. The Wirewalker vehicle makes use of wave-induced “mooring motion” to travel vertically down the mooring wire. At the bottom of the desired profiling range the profiler releases its grip on the wire and free-ascends under its own buoyancy, substantially decoupled from mooring motion. Typical profiling speeds are 10 m/minute, round-trip. Applications have ranged from coastal (1-20 m every 2 minutes to deep sea (1-500m every 50 min). With wave-power, very large multi-disciplinary instrument payloads can be supported. Interfacing af internally-recording instrument is accomplished simply by bolting it on and adding foam blocks to achieve the desired ascent rate. After distributing  about ten systems to colleagues through SIO, the tech-transfer company Del Mar Oceanographic (DMO) was formed in 2015 to commercialize the Wirewalker. DMO has received enormous support from SIO and the UCSD Tech Transfer Office as well as from The Maritime Alliance, a national organization focused on promoting US Blue Technology. Never-the-less, aggressive activity is required for DMO to establish, extend, and defend the Wirewalker & associated technology. In today’s world, “If you make a better mousetrap…” all sorts of interesting things start to happen.
