Join Scripps Oceanography for a special screening of the 2017 documentary film Spirit of Discovery. The screening will be held in place of this month's Institutional Seminar Series on Oct. 18 at 12 p.m. at the Scripps Seaside Forum in honor of Walter Munk’s upcoming 101st birthday.
Directed by award-winning filmmaker Eliana Alvarez Martinez, Spirit of Discovery follows legendary Scripps oceanographer Walter Munk as he goes on an expedition to Cabo Pulmo in Baja California, Mexico, in search of the mysterious species of “flying” devil ray named in his honor. The Munk devil ray, or Mobula Munkiana, is known for its ability to leap out of the water at great heights, giving the rays the appearance of flight.
After 27 years of promising to one day see the rays, Munk embarks on a journey to find the threatened species. Munk is joined by Giuseppe Notarbartolo di Sciara, a marine conservationist who first “discovered” the shy rays as a Scripps student and named the species in honor of his mentor. Munk’s scientific team also includes Scripps scientists Octavio Aburto and Brad Erisman, graduate student Timothy Rowell, and alumnus Joshua Stewart.
Is it too late for Munk and company to find the elusive devil rays? Attend the screening to find out!
