Title: Bioenergetics and Habitability in Hydrothermal Systems and the Subseafloor

Abstract: Microbial life in deep-sea hydrothermal systems and the subseafloor relies on chemical disequilibria for metabolic energy. I will discuss recent results of bioenergetics calculations that targeted anabolism and catabolism in several hydrothermal environments. I will also describe our new efforts to quantify habitability in marine sediments on a global scale and introduce an exciting technology (microcalorimetry) to measure microbial heat production.
