ArcticMix Adventures

I’ll given an informal description a Scripps-led expedition to the Arctic Ocean in August/Sept 2015. Our NSF funded project was designed to measure turbulent mixing and associated  turbulent heat fluxes beneath the icy surface waters of the Beaufort Sea, and detangle the dynamical perpetrators.  We flitted here and there exploring a variety of fascinating processes, from shockingly strong _upwards_ heat fluxes near the edge of the multi-year ice pack to elegant but ethereal doubly diffusive staircases, to canuck-style turbulence near the Mackenzie river outflow, to dramatic top-to-bottom mixing in Bering Strait. We are only 6 weeks off the boat, so results will be fairly preliminary, but perhaps will be somewhat of interest and hopefully will generate useful comments and suggestions as our analysis gets underway in earnest.
