Cost and Funding

The MAS degree program is entirely self-supporting and receives no state funding. The cost of the master's degree program is approximately $40,000, which includes all program instruction, administrative fees and health insurance. Students pay $685 per unit of instruction plus miscellaneous campus fees which are assessed each quarter of registration. The program fees do not include books, parking and incidentals. Students should also budget for housing and transportation costs.

Students are encouraged to research scholarship and fellowship opportunities that are available through a number of outside agencies, such as NOAA and NASA, and through non-government organizations and foundations with interests in climate science and policy. There are many opportunities for scholarships and fellowships for US and international applicants, but interested students must investigate and apply for these on their own.

Commercial bank loans are available for students. Government loans are available for participants taking six (6) or more units per quarter.

U.S. Military Service Members and Veterans

The MAS CSP program supports the educational needs of active duty and reserve officers. This advanced professional degree program provides both fundamental science training and applied skills that are relevant for military leadership positions as well as post-service employment.

The Scripps graduate program has a long history of educating current and former military officers about climate science and of engaging students in military-relevant research projects. Veterans have used this new professional degree program as an opportunity to transfer their experience to new fields and obtain a new integrated set of skills geared towards transitioning to civilian career options.
