Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the Birch Aquarium at Scripps are partnering with the 2003 San Diego County Fair to help create a Commotion by the Ocean, June 13-July 6.
Coinciding with Scripps's 100th birthday year, Scripps Oceanography and the Birch Aquarium will present the exhibit, Scripps Ocean Explorations, where visitors will experience the thrill of exploring the great depths of the ocean world. The 20,000-square-foot exhibit will include artifacts like a diver's shark cage and deep-ocean core samples, plus amazing videos from the world's oceans.
Each evening at 7:30 p.m., Scripps Ocean Explorations will feature "Meet the Scripps Explorer," with explorers presenting fun and engaging science discoveries and true-adventure tales for all ages.
Elsewhere on the fairgrounds, visitors will have the chance to walk through a life-size, inflatable gray whale, illustrating the enormous size and fascinating inner anatomy of whales.
Live costumed characters from the Birch Aquarium will stroll around the fairgrounds, including a whale, a shark, and a sea horse. And although sea horses are fish, horse lovers are in for a surprise in the World of Horses barn: a sea horse stall!
The Birch Aquarium at Scripps and the San Diego County Fair began their partnership in spring 2003 with an interactive assembly program for area schools that teaches kids about the wonders of kelp forests and the marine creatures that inhabit them.
