Enjoy a rockin’ sunset this summer at the ninth annual Green Flash Concert Series at Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego. The concert series kicks off May 21 with opening act Birds of Tokyo and headliner Joan Osborne. These unique monthly concerts – presented in partnership with 102.1 KPRi FM – are held from 5:30-9 p.m. for music lovers ages 21 and older. Proceeds support exhibits and educational programming at Birch Aquarium at Scripps.
Australian band Birds of Tokyo’s insistent, bittersweet rock sounds have resonated deeply with fans and critics alike. Hailed by Rolling Stone magazine as “stirring” and “anthemic,” the band also won the magazine’s 2011 “Reader’s Choice” Award.
Multi-platinum selling artist and Grammy nominee Joan Osborne is perhaps best known for her international hit “(What If God Was) One of Us” in 1995. Since then she has released several albums, toured extensively, and shared the stage with artists such as Bob Dylan, Luciano Pavarotti, Stevie Wonder, Emmylou Harris, and Patti Smith.
The Green Flash concert series combines live music with panoramic ocean views on the aquarium’s stunning outdoor Tide-Pool Plaza. Savory happy-hour appetizers, craft beers, and wines are available for purchase. Keep an eye out for a real “green flash,” a rare optical phenomenon caused by refraction of light as the sun sets on the horizon.
