Photo of the Week: Classroom Connection

A biogeochemical sensor float about to be deployed in the Southern Ocean is decorated by Isabel Seguro, senior research associate at the Centre for Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences (COAS) at the University of East Anglia and John Ballard, a chemist with Scripps Oceanography’s Oceanographic Data Facility, and others aboard RRS James Clark Ross.

The floats are being put in the water in the South Atlantic as part of the NSF-sponsored Southern Ocean Carbon and Climate Observations and Modeling project (SOCCOM), which is focused on unlocking the mysteries of the Southern Ocean and determining its influence on climate. The observational team of the Princeton-lead project is headed by Scripps Oceanography's Lynne Talley and Scripps technicians and students often participate in the cruises.

The yellow-bodied float is being decorated as "The Okie Pearl" for Curtis Inge Middle School in Noble, Oklahoma as part of SOCCOM's Adopt-a-Float program, which lets elementary and high school science classes adopt and follow individual floats.
