UC San Diego's Scripps Institution of Oceanography scientists study the biochemistry, physiology, genetics, ecology, and evolution of marine organisms ranging from viruses and bacteria to fish and whales.

Scripps faculty also lead programs focusing on discovery and development of marine natural products for biomedical applications and responses of marine life to climate change, as well as the ecology of coastal and deep ocean environments.
