Diving Plan Policies and Requirements
The ultimate responsibility for safety rests with the individual diver. It is the diver's responsibility and duty to refuse to dive if, in their judgment, conditions are unsafe or unfavorable, or if they would be violating the precepts of their training or the regulations outlined in the SIO Diving Safety Manual.
Dives should be planned around the competency of the least experienced diver. Before conducting any diving operations under the auspices of Scripps/UCSD, the Lead Diver for a proposed operation should consider the following:
- Diver's qualifications, depth certifications, and type of certification held by each diver;
- Emergency plan (Appendix 5) including:
- Emergency contact information for each diver;
- Location and contact information for the nearest available hyperbaric chamber;
- Location and contact information for the nearest available hospital; and
- Contact information and emergency management strategy for emergency transport.
- Approximate number of proposed dives;
- Location(s) of proposed dives;
- Estimated depth(s) and bottom time(s) anticipated;
- Repetitive dives, if required;
- Proposed work, equipment, and boats to be employed; and
- Any hazardous conditions anticipated and appropriate mitigations.
A dive plan must be submitted and approved by the DSO or DCB prior to proposed operation for all scientific diving projects. Remote or field projects must be submitted for review 4 weeks prior to the start of the project.
Though UCSD affords workers compensation coverage to employees and graduate students working within the scope of their authorization and on an approved dive plan, supplemental dive accident and travel insurance from Divers Alert Network and/or UCOP is necessary for all remote or international field work.
