Section 2: Specifications

Scientific Support Equipment

Navigational capabilities: Trimble NT 300 differential GPS, Simrad Taiyo ADF, Ashtech ADU attitude sensing system, Furuno 3 cm and 10 cm Radars, Ametek Doppler Speed Log, 2 Sperry Gyros.

Winches: DYNACON traction winch with interchangeable drums with 10,000 m of 0.680" electromechanical cable or 10,000 m of 9/16 " 3x19 mechanical wire. This winch is capable of handling 0.680 " fiber optic cable. Markey CTD winch with 9,100 m of 0.322" conductor wire (CTD) with Lebus grooving. Markey hydrographic winch with 7,600 m of 1/4 inch 3x19 hydrographic wire.

Support equipment: Stern A-frame, starboard J-frame, Nautilus crane on main deck, Hiab crane on main deck, extensive boltdowns for removable equipment on decks and in laboratories, can carry refrigerated and laboratory vans. Has transducer well, stern ramp, walk-in scientific freezer/refrigerator, Knudsen Engineering 320B digital 3.5/12 kHz sub-bottom profiling system. An uncontaminated seawater system with 300 series stainless steel through hull fitting and initial 6 foot piping transitioning to pvc for remainder and 15 gal per min pump with non-metallic internals is installed.

Permanent and removable scientific equipment: RDI 150 kHz narrowband ADCP, Sippican Mk 12 digital XBT system, custom underway data acquisition system.

Two Price 2,000 psi air compressors are available, but are not permanently installed. One of these is at present diesel-driven and mounted in a 12'x14' custom box. The necessary fittings are installed on New Horizon for installation of this unit on the main deck. The other (which is electrically driven) is placed on the boat deck where the necessary electric supply is available.

Use of isotopes is prohibited in ship's laboratories. Isotope isolation vans are available by request.

An extensive inventory of instrumentation and technical services is available, e.g., dredges, coring equipment, plankton nets, trawls, CTD/rosette systems, MOCNESS systems, single and multichannel seismic systems, submersible strobes and transmitters, etc. A user fee to recover expenses for operating supplies, calibration, maintenance and repair is typically charged for each of these.

Vans: Vans can be carried on the main and winch decks.

Communications: VHF voice, HF radio voice and teletype, cellular telephone voice and FAX, Inmarsat voice, data and FAX. For current phone numbers please check the communications web page.
