SURF (REU) Application
Summer 2018 Application Opens by the end of January, 2018
Application Deadline - Monday, March 5, 2018 (11:59 PM Pacific Standard Time)
Students can apply to the SURF program by completing the online application package.
A complete package includes:
- Biographical Information.
- Personal Statements: A series of short-answer prompts, each limited to a 250 word response. One prompt asks you to identify your top 3 preferences for your potential research mentor. A list of potential SURF faculty mentors can be found here. You may also explore other research areas at Scripps for additional research interests and potential mentors here. Although we cannot guarantee the availability of additional SURF mentors, we will make every attempt to match you with one of your faculty preferences.
- One Letter of Recommendation: Letters should come from a professor (or instructor or research faculty) in your field who is familiar with your academic skills and performance and your potential to excel in a research program. You will be required to provide the name and contact information for your recommender on your application. That person will receive an automatic email with instructions for submitting the letter of recommendation only after you submit your application. Important: The automated request for a letter of recommendation only goes out once you have completed and submit your part of the recommendation. You should notify your recommender well ahead of time and you need to completing and submit your application ahead of the posted deadline to give your recommender time to submit their letter.
- Academic Transcripts: Upload an electronic copy of your academic transcripts as a .pdf file. Unofficial transcripts are accepted, but official transcripts may be required for final acceptance to the program.
After completing the application you will receive a confirmation that your application has been submitted and you can check on the status. Please email email@example.com if you have any questions on your application.
Applicants who are selected to participate in the SURF program will be notified of a conditional acceptance pending mentor/lab placement. It is anticipated that notifications will begin by mid-late March.
Applicants must be a matriculating, undergraduate student during the 2017-2018 academic year, and must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
Funding for this REU site is provided by the National Science Foundation’s Division of Ocean Sciences located in Arlington, VA. As part of grant expectations we are conducting an evaluation of the usefulness of project components and the impact that participation in this project has on students. As a project participant, you will be asked to complete one online survey at the end of this summer research experience. You may also be asked to complete an additional evaluation form at the end of project activities. Your voluntary participation in these surveys is requested.
All students who are offered a position at this REU site have until March 15th or later to accept or decline the offer.
