Yifeng Mao studies nonlinear waves and their interactions using analytical and asymptotic methods, numerical simulations, and experiments in fluids. Her research is divided into two main areas: the mathematical and experimental study of nonlinear wave interactions, progressing from one-phase to multiphase wave interactions, and applications in geophysical fluid dynamics, including transport induced by nonlinear internal gravity wave interactions in stars and breaking waves in oceans.
