Assistant Vice Chancellor

Patrick M. Callaghan is the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Finance and Operations at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego. Callaghan functions as the Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operations Officer to Scripps Oceanography, providing leadership and oversight of:

  • Budget and Finance
  • Research Operations
  • Facilities and Capital Projects
  • Information Technology
  • Campus Planning and Construction
  • Contracts and Grants
  • Human Resources Management

The institution receives over $214 million in sponsored research funding with an overall annual operating budget of $281 million. Callaghan also oversees campus planning and construction at Scripps, which includes 86 buildings on 170 acres on campuses in La Jolla and the Nimitz Marine Facility in Point Loma.

Callaghan serves as an ex-officio member of the Scripps Heritage Committee, which works to preserve the history of Scripps Oceanography; as the chair of the Oceanographic Institutions Committee, which creates a forum for oceanographic institutions with federal and state contracts/grants to collaborate over operational issues, current risks, and industry trends; and on the Enterprise Information Services Committee (EISC) which oversees the Enterprise Systems Renewal (ESR) program, an initiative that is transforming core business and administrative processes across UC San Diego.
