About Dr. Giron Nava
"I was born and raised in Mexico City, where I lived until I went to college in La Paz, Mexico, dreaming of becoming a marine scientist. A few years later, I got a degree in Oceanography from Universidad Autonoma de Baja California, and then pursued a PhD at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, at UC San Diego.
Since then, my work focuses on enhancing the role of policy, cooperation, and technology to support ocean sustainability. I have experience in projects for ocean systems management in over 15 countries. I have led global projects to address ocean sustainability challenges, such as the reduction of illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing in seafood supply chains in international markets, and the enabling of blue carbon strategies in collaboration with national governments across Southeast Asia.
I currently lead the Ocean Action Agenda programme at the World Economic Forum, where I support the acceleration of ocean solutions through building public-private partnerships to support the role of blue foods in global food systems, harnessing the role of the ocean for climate change mitigation strategies, and boosting ocean innovation to increase its contribution to society. All of this is done in collaboration with global leaders from public and private institutions, who recognize the importance of the ocean and partner with the World Economic Forum to influence others. I am also one of the co-founders of the Early Career Ocean Professionals programme of the UN Decade of Ocean Sciences for Sustainable Development, which seeks to empower early career ocean professionals to take ownership and leadership of the Ocean Decade's plans.
I am convinced that it is only by empowering the next generations that new ideas will flourish, which will ultimately find solutions to the most pressing challenges that we face."
