Ombuds

Students at Scripps Institution of Oceanography have access to two divisions of ombuds: department ombuds and university ombuds. Both are available to provide general advice and guidance to help students succeed in their graduate program.

 

Report Bias 

The Office for the Prevention of Harassment and Discrimination's mission is to educate the UC San Diego community about issues of bias, harassment and discrimination and to assist with the prevention and resolution of these issues in a fair and responsible manner. Incidents of bias can be reported via the OPHD website. 

Whistleblower Information

Campus Community Centers at UC San Diego build affinity among a diverse population of students, faculty and staff members. Who to Call? Resources

Resources on who to call when you or someone else is experiencing a behavioral health crisis and, for a variety of reasons, you may not want to call the police.

Local Resource 1) San Diego Access and Crisis Line @ +1 (888) 724-7240

This confidential and free-of-charge talk line is open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, and monitored by Master's-level and Licensed Clinicians. The counselors average 16 years of clinical experience in a variety of backgrounds, including: emotionally disturbed youth, geriatric social services, nursing, in-home domestic violence intervention, case management, and drug and alcohol abuse. Language interpreter services enable the ACL to assist in 150 languages within seconds. This service can help callers navigate community resources in San Diego County and/or support accessing counseling services.

Local Resource 2) San Diego County hospitals specializing in Behavioral Health

If someone needs urgent mental health support they can go directly to anyone at one of these hospitals. These hospitals provide mental health support and also accept Medi-Cal insurance: Bayview Hospital, Grossmont Hospital, Palomar Hospital, Paradise Valley Hospital, Mesa Vista Hospital, University of San Diego Hospital

Local Resource 3) Psychiatric Emergency Response Team (PERT)

If someone is experiencing a behavioral health crisis, emergency assistance can be requested through San Diego County Psychiatric Emergency Response Team (PERT). This service sends out a Therapist into the community to assess if someone is a Danger to themselves (DTS) or a Danger to others (DTO). This service is partnered with the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) and can be reached by calling (619) 531-2065.

Community Engagement Fellows

Undergraduate and Graduate Student Fellows support the Director of Diversity Initiatives in efforts to develop and engage the Scripps Community around equity, diversity, and inclusion.  Fellows have the opportunity to gain valuable leadership, community-building and project management skills while giving back to the Scripps and UC San Diego community.  Fellows assist the Director of Diversity Initiatives in the organization and planning of various events and programs at Scripps designed to (1) foster community building and collaboration, (2) improve campus climate, (3) build professional skills & networks, and (4) enhance cultural awareness and/or education by engaging Scripps Oceanography students, staff, faculty and alumni in a variety of activities and events. View current and past Community Engagement Fellows.

POC Circle 

Bimonthly gathering where BIPOC students (black, indigenous, people of color) can come together as a community to build a support system that allows us to individually and collectively thrive at Scripps. Takes place the second and fourth Friday of the month.

Postdocs

Postdoc Appreciation Event

Annual event held during National Postdoc Appreciation Week (Sept. 21-25, 2020) designed to celebrate and welcome new postdocs to Scripps Institution of Oceanography. 

Postdoctoral Scholar Survey 

The Postdocs@UCSD Survey™ annually asks postdocs (Title codes 3252, 3253, 3254, 3255, and 3256) across campus, including General Campus, Health Sciences and Marine Sciences, to contribute their anonymous feedback about perceptions of their workplace. It measures department and leadership performance from the postdoc’s perspective and provides valuable data for improving the work environment. View the results of the latest survey here.

Scripps IMPROVES (Inclusive Mentorship Program for Retention & Outreach thru Value-driven Engagement & Support)

Initiative offers tiered mentorship training and engagement opportunities to support the Scripps community at various stages of career pathway.

Junior Faculty Monthly Meetup

Junior Faculty Advisory Board

J-FAB is a standing committee that meets annually with assistant professors, assistant researchers, and newly hired associate level faculty and researchers to monitor for conflicts with senior level faculty. The committee is comprised of the three Section Heads, the Scripps Director of Diversity Initiatives, and one of the Scripps Ombudspersons. The committee chair will rotate annually. DisAbility Counseling and Consulting

The division of Human Resources responsible for providing disability management and job accommodation consultation services to UC San Diego faculty and staff who have a medical condition (physical or mental) that interferes with their ability to work or return to work. Scripps HIRES (Hiring thru Inclusive Recruitment & Engagement Strategies)

Initiative provides support to staff search committees through training on implicit bias in hiring, and best practices for inclusive resume screening and interviewing.  Program also provides guidance for targeted outreach to affinity-based professional associations to encourage a diverse candidate pool.

Scripps Staff Association

Staff Education & Wellness

UC San Diego Staff Education & Development is a division of the Human Resources Department that consists of Learning & Development, Organization Development, and Learning Technologies. Staff Education & Development supports two training facilities, instructor led classes, e-learning, thousands of course enrollments and compliance training reporting.
