Artists Dwight Hwang and Oriana Poindexter (Scripps Alumna, MAS `15) are proud to present Impressions in Light & Shadow, an exhibition featuring new gyotaku and photo-based prints at Perspectives Space in Encinitas, California. This month-long exhibition highlights the unique beauty and majesty of the giant kelp forest ecosystems off Southern California's coastline.

Giant kelp forests stand tall along Southern California's coastline as home for hundreds of species of wildlife. Although these underwater forests have ebbed and flowed for centuries, they are currently in decline following the marine heat waves of the past decade. Through Impressions in Light & Shadow, guests will witness the importance of these kelp forests and learn about the roles they play in maintaining biodiversity, mitigating climate impacts, and protecting the coastline - all without needing to squeeze into a wetsuit.

Hwang's gyotaku prints and Poindexter's photo-based works allow their subjects, the wild species of Southern California's giant kelp forests, to share a window into their underwater world. The exhibition programming includes an opening reception, two workshops led by the artists, and a panel discussion with artists and scientific experts from Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

The exhibit will be on view from July 3rd through July 30th by appointment. For more information on the exhibition and the artists, please visit dwighthwang.com and orianapoindexter.com
