The U.S. Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to increase mutual opportunities in ocean science, technology, and the sustainable development of marine resources.

With this new partnership, there will be series of publicly accessible Lunch & Learn seminars. The first will feature speakers Bruce Appelgate (Scripps Oceanography) and John Vavrinec (PNNL) presenting on two novel research vessels that use sustainable propulsion systems. Scripps has commissioned a hydrogen-hybrid vessel and PNNL will soon add the first plug-in electric-diesel hybrid vessel to its research fleet.
