Title: Soaring into the future: 60 years of Hydraulics Laboratory Science and Engineering
Abstract: Earth sciences research has long been an endeavor in which scientists ask seemingly unanswerable questions and then work in close collaboration with engineers to create the innovative instruments, platforms and facilities required to answer them. Perhaps nowhere is this more evident than in the 60 year history of the Hydraulics Laboratory (HLab) at Scripps, now home to a state-of-the-art ocean laboratory facility, the Scripps Ocean Atmosphere Research Simulator, or SOARS. This presentation will highlight the varied multi-disciplinary history of the HLab as it continues to provide a foundation for scientific discoveries and engineering achievements into the future.
Bio: Douglas Alden is currently the Lead Engineer for the Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes at Scripps. He started working in the HLab as an undergraduate engineering student learning from the talented HLab staff how to be a jack-of-all trades and a master of some. Douglas was part of the HLab for more than three decades using the lab’s varied capabilities and facilities to support projects in multiple disciplines. He is currently chair of the Hydraulics Laboratory Panel.

Title: Innovation & Commercialization Opportunities and Support through the StartBlue Ocean Enterprise Accelerator
Abstract: Are you ready to dive deep into ocean innovation? Building on the success of the StartBlue program at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the Rady School of Management, UC San Diego, this enhanced accelerator is designed to launch and scale the latest ocean-based scientific research into actionable, and commercially viable solutions to support ocean challenges, coastal resilience, and economic growth. The StartBlue Ocean Enterprise Accelerator is a recipient of the Department of Commerce NOAA Ocean Enterprise Initiative Phase 2 award, which supports building the blue economy with ocean observing technologies, tools, and information services.f the HLab as it continues to provide a foundation for scientific discoveries and engineering achievements into the future.
Bio: Vanessa Scott leads industry and innovation initiatives at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego and has supported Scripps research innovations, spin outs, and industry collaborations including the Scripps Corporate Alliance since 2019. She has supported the StartBlue Accelerator from Scripps Institution of Oceanography & Rady School of Management since the launch in 2020 through the Build to Scale Industry Challenge grant from the Economic Development Administration. Vanessa completed a Masters in Advanced Studies in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation from Scripps Institution of Oceanography where she developed a business and marketing plan for Smartfin, an ocean-focused startup, to support the launch from lab to market.
