Fleet Space Technologies is developing a new satellite constellation for affordable narrowband data communications to remote areas all over the globe. Fleet’s proprietary technologies will include the satellites in space, rugged and cheap user terminals that interface to the sensors and devices in the field, as well as cloud based infrastructure to get the data back to the users. Fleet is currently in the early prototyping phase for the user terminals, and aims to design the system to be compatible with the largest possible range of use cases across the industrial IoT user spectrum.

Fleet is conducting a pilot program later this year to demonstrate the essential features of its service to users across a number of industries having assets in remote areas not well-covered by terrestrial data links.

In this talk, Andrew Barton will talk about Fleet’s plans for its satellite data service as well as the pilot program. This talk will be a chance for researchers in the oceanography community to learn about the expected capabilities of the Fleet communications system as well to convey their specific needs and technical requirements.

Andrew Barton is the Director of Launch and US Operations for Fleet, and is charge of identifying pilot programs with US partners. Prior to joining Fleet, Andrew worked at the XPRIZE Foundation as director of Technical Operations for the Google Lunar XPRIZE, and earlier he worked at the European Space Agency in the Netherlands as a specialist on spacecraft and launcher structures. Andrew holds a Ph.D and bachelors degrees in aerospace engineering from the University of Sydney and a Masters degree in Space Studies from the International Space University.

Fleet is an Australian start-up that recently closed a series A venture capital investment round to develop these technologies.
