WU, BAONING

Cecil and Ida Green Scholar

My name is Baoning Wu. I am a theoretical geophysicist who studies earthquakes.

I have been a postdoctoral scholar at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, since December 2024, working with Dr. Alice Gabriel. I was a postdoctoral scholar at the University of Southern California 2021-2024, working with Dr. Sylvain Barbot. I earned my PhD at UC Riverside in 2021, working with Dr. David Oglesby.

My research covers a wide range of topics. A common theme is to re-evaluate existing theoretical models and to reconcile old and new observations. Some recent questions I investigated include:

  • What is the physical meaning of rate-and-state state variable,
  • What is the physical mechanism of slow earthquakes,
  • How to physically interpret the back-projection results of earthquake high-frequency radiation.
  • How does Earth's surface affect the tsunami-genesis of subduction earthquakes,
