MEDIA ADVISORY: PRESS CONFERENCE - IPCC Scripps Researchers to Address New Major International Climate Report

What: Media are invited to attend a special press conference to take place at Scripps Institution of Oceanography following the Feb. 2 release of a special summary report prepared for policymakers as part of the Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

When: Friday, Feb. 2, 11 a.m.-12 p.m.

Where: Birch Aquarium at Scripps, 2300 Expedition Way, La Jolla
(Take I-5, exit la Jolla Village Drive, west one mile.)

Who: Two Scripps Oceanography scientists who contributed to the IPCC assessment report, researchers Lynne Talley and V. Ramanathan, will discuss their participation and scientific perspective on the report. In addition, Scripps climate experts Ralph Keeling, Tim Barnett and Daniel Cayan will join Scripps Director Tony Haymet in providing insights and a comprehensive analysis of the new report.

Background: The IPCC, sponsored by the United Nations, creates periodical syntheses of climate change research and analyzes potential societal impacts and options for adaptation and mitigation. Previous reports issued in 1990, 1995 and 2001 have concluded with increasing certainty that human activities are changing Earth's climate, most notably in the form of a worldwide warming of the atmosphere and oceans. The Summary for Policymakers is the first component of the report from the IPCC's Working Group I and is part of the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report that will be released in stages throughout 2007. The Summary for Policymakers will contain several key findings and revised estimates about climate change ranging from temperature increase to sea level rise.
