Long-time Scripps mariner Pete Steiner suffered a heart attack on Oct. 12 while performing crane operations aboard R/V Roger Revelle, which was in port in Kaohsiung (Taiwan).  Pete was taken by ambulance to Yuan Hospital, where he was admitted into intensive care.  He died that evening.

Pete was an extraordinary mariner.  His first role aboard Scripps vessels was in 2005 aboard R/V Robert Gordon Sproul as a per-diem (temporary) cook, and in 2010 Pete was hired into a career mariner position (able-bodied seaman) aboard R/V Roger Revelle.  During his tenure at Scripps he sailed aboard every vessel except R/V Melville.  His professionalism, collegiality, and goodwill embodied the term "shipmate,” and he will be deeply missed.

Captain Dave Murline remembers Pete: "Pete was always a happy-go-lucky guy who would give you the last sip of beer from the pitcher!  He took a lot of pride in his work and was a consummate professional, whether it was making a delicious gourmet meal or painting a master piece bulkhead!  He was full of life, always up for a good time and was ready to lead the charge on any adventure! He will surely be missed around here. I can surely say my life was richer because he was in it."

Pete was 51, unmarried, and is survived by his parents, Edward and Rosa Steiner, brother Andy, and sister Kathy.  Condolences can be expressed to Edward and Rosa Steiner, 3078 Calle Mariposa, Santa Barbara, CA 93105.

A memorial will be held at the Scripps Martin Johnson House for Pete on Sunday, Nov. 10 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.  His family will drive down from Santa Barbara to meet all of Pete's friends.  A formal mass will take place in Santa Barbara on Thursday Nov. 7.  This is a chance for Pete's friends and family to share stories and memories of a great guy. Food and drinks will be provided.
