Mobula Munkiana, or Munk's Devil Ray, is named after Scripps Institution of Oceanography geophysicist Walter Munk. Munk and several Scripps researchers saw the ray catch air amid breaching humpback whales at Cabo Pulmo in Mexico's Baja California, where Scripps marine ecologist Octavio Aburto-Oropeza has documented the success of a local marine reserve.
