NOAA Fisheries researcher Dave Griffith washes down a bongo net aboard Scripps Oceanography R/V New Horizon. Bongo nets are lowered to a depth of 210 meters (690 feet) and towed to catch zooplankton. They also feature LOPCs (laser optical plankton counters) that sort the zooplankton trapped in the net into different size groups. The latest cruise of the California Cooperative Fisheries Investigations series, which has been surveying biology, chemistry, and physics of California coastal waters since 1949, concluded on Monday.
