Yui Takeshita, a graduate student at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, manages the Benthic Ecosystem and Acidification Measurement System (BEAMS), an instrument package that measures the rate of reef metabolism. The package includes SeapHOx, SAMI, temperature sensors and current profilers to collect data on seawater chemistry on the reef. Researchers Todd Martz and Jennifer Smith deployed the package, development of which was supported by the National Science Foundation, off the central Pacific Ocean island of Palmyra in July.
