This image of a developing grunion embryo was one in a series of images posted by associated professor of biology Amro Hamdoun earlier this summer. Grunion are small, silvery fish which swim onto Southern California beaches at high tide to spawn during spring and early summer.
Hamdoun, who is probably best known for his work with sea urchin embryos, posted the images to his lab's Twitter feed, and included a series of animated gifs showing embryonic development.
