A sea lion took advantage of an unusual event on July 8, when schools of Northern Anchovy drifted toward La Jolla Shores and Scripps Pier. Researchers are not sure why the large schools came so close to shore on a northward journey up the California coast. Scripps Oceanography marine biologists noted that the 23 degree C (74 degree F) waters off San Diego are at the high threshold of the preferred temperature range of anchovy.
