Scripps paleoceanographer Richard Norris shows UC San Diego undergraduate students how layers of sand build up on a beach for SIO 104: Paleobiology and History of Life. Norris studies ancient life and ecosystems through evidence such as fossilized plankton, fish teeth, and coral buried in sediment. Photo by Erik Jepsen, UC San Diego Publications.

This is one of several field trips for the course, which introduces students to the basic biological and environmental patterns and processes that have shaped the history of life.
