Photo of the Week: A Colorful Christmas

Half a century ago, famed Scripps Oceanography marine biologist Martin W. Johnson drew a festive scene titled "Deep in the Sea at Christmas Time" for his holiday cards.

Posted on Scripps's social media accounts this week, that image inspired current marine biology PhD student Adi Khen to make an updated version using more modern illustrating tools.

"Please enjoy my illustrated holiday card, featuring some creatures from the La Jolla Kelp Forest," Khen wrote. "The 'tree' in the center is the kelp Postelsia, with air bubbles as ornaments and a sea star on top."
