Education specialist Chris FitzSimmons explains the Seafloor Mapping experience to visitors at the Expedition at Sea: R/V Sally Ride Gallery at Birch Aquarium at Scripps.

A sensor mounted above the table measures the height of the sand-like material as visitors shape it into mountains and valleys, then projects contour lines and colors back onto the surface -- and visitor's hands and arms -- to represent the multi-beam sonar technology used by Scripps Oceanography to map the seafloor.
