Two scientists walk across the crackling ice of a frozen lake in Antarctica in this photo by Angela Zoumplis, a marine biology graduate student who works in the lab of genomics researcher Andrew Allen.
Zoumplis, who studies the evolution and ecology of polar microorganisms, shot the photo during a three-month expedition to the icy continent in 2016. She recently entered the photo in the 2019 National Geographic Travel Photo Contest.
In this photo, the research team is collecting samples from the meltwater of the glacier to better understand ecosystem change.
